Help safeguard your earnings from illness or injury with

Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance

The plan is for members of the State Bar of Wisconsin (SBOW) only. As a member, you are eligible to apply if you are under age 70, working at least 30 hours per week, and have annual earnings of at least $20,000. Coverage is subject to Prudential’s approval of satisfactory evidence of insurability.

Monthly benefit amounts range from $500 to $10,000. Your monthly coverage amount, plus any other disability income coverage you may have, cannot exceed 70% of your monthly earned income.

You can receive disability benefits if you cannot perform the duties of your regular occupation because of a disability; you are under the regular care of a doctor, and you incur a loss of income of 20% or more.

Yes. We understand you may be partially disabled and still able to work part-time. If you are disabled and working and incur a loss in monthly earnings of 20% or more as a result of your disability, you will receive a monthly benefit based on your percentage of lost earnings.

You choose how soon you receive monthly benefits—after 90 or 180 days while disabled and not working. Your elimination period for a period of disability while you are working is 180 days. (This is called the Elimination Period.) Before deciding, consider your personal finances and how long you can cover your bills without your regular income.

Your coverage under the SBOW Long Term Disability Insurance Plan will begin on the first day of the month after you have been approved and have paid the first premium and are actively at work.

Any disability for which you received medical treatment, consultation, care or services, including diagnostic measures, or took prescribed drugs or medicines, or followed treatment recommendation in the 12 months just prior to your effective date of coverage would not be covered for the first 12 months of coverage.

The SBOW Long Term Disability Insurance Plan does not cover any disabilities caused by, contributed to by, or resulting from: Intentionally self-inflicted injuries; war, declared or undeclared, or any act of war; or pre-existing condition.

Disabilities due in whole or in part to mental illness have a limited pay period of 24 months during your lifetime, as described in the Certificate of Coverage.

The SBOW Long Term Disability Insurance Plan comes with a satisfaction guarantee. Once you receive your Certificate of Coverage, read it over carefully. If the plan does not meet your expectations, return it within 30 days of receipt. Any premiums paid will be refunded to you.
